I’m struggling with my emotions today.
I can’t stand seeing 50-60 year olds swapping houses on facebay. My brief angry stalking of various recent victims of this particular rant shows that they are often women who aren’t married; divorced or with long term boyfriends. They seem to go on a lot of holidays. They don’t seem to advertise a career other than the odd Avon rep. Their homes are a bnm/homebargains/Ikea infestation of chintz and cack. They like having their nails done. Most of them have grown up children they may well be claiming for to justify the two or three bed homes the government allow them, but any permanent resident to their homes is unlikely according to their Facebook posts. They were all grandparents early on.
Cue my own mother: same age, managed to educate her own kids to keep their legs shut. Scraping through the ‘bought a house before the crash’ process. Working a respectable 40 hours a week; educated and experienced. A holiday for my mum is a luxury these days. And she would never splash out on getting her nails done unless it was a special occasion.
Now I definitely am not saying UC and social housing is a bad thing. And I know that these scroungers don’t take half as much cash as crooked politicians and fat cat directors. And I’d never advocate changing the welfare system just because of a few bad eggs. But it really hits a raw nerve with me when I see these particular people getting by just fine whilst I watch my hard working mother struggle.
